Lips portray the healthiness of our body and healthy lips are always smooth, saucy and glossy. Thus, to look good and sexy on your lips, common problems on lips have to be checked. Just go through the list and understand the causes before we select the right remedies to fix it.
- Dry And Chapped Lips
Commonly found among people living under dry and humid weather condition or staying long hours in centrally heated or air-conditioned room. Those who suck or lick habitually on their lips are at risk too. According to Dr. Elsenberg of University of Connecticut Health Center, the over-wetting with saliva of the outer lips due to chronic lip licking can actually lead to harmful dryness or even infection of the lips, with peeling, cracking and discomfort. Chapped lips are exposed to the risk of sunburn too.
Causes: Dry air, humid condition, winter, hot sun, habitual licking and sucking on lips.
- Sunburn
Lip is easily burnt by the UV ray as it’s very thin with only 3-5 cellular layers and has very few melanin, the natural pigment which serve to screen the UV ray. We get lip burn if we don’t wear any lip protection as our lips are always exposed and noticeable.
Cause: UV ray from sun
- Traumatic Lesion
Beware of your own teeth as habitual chewing always causes traumatic lip lesions. Another culprit is sucking or licking on the lips. As mentioned above, saliva evaporates and leaves behind dry lips which tend to chap or crack.
Causes: Habitual chewing, sucking and licking on lips
- Yeast Infections
2 major causes which lead to yeast infections are antibiotic treatment and inappropriate medications which lead to dryness of the mouth. The natural microbial balance is altered and yeast just sneak in. The infections are characterized by chronic fissures, redness and crustiness at the angles of the mouth.
Causes: Antibiotic treatment, inappropriate medications
- Recurrent Cold Sores
They’re also known as fever blisters which last for one week to 10 days on each outbreak and potentially contagious. The major culprit of the condition is Herpes Simplex virus. Stress, menses, fever, sun exposure or intensely cold environment might trigger the episodic outbreak.
Cause: Herpes Simplex virus Apparently, it’s not easy to avoid these 5 common lip problems but with self-determination, it could be done to certain extent. Let’s stop licking the lips as the first step.

Hey Zing,
Nice post. Yeah, I wish I knew that cold sores were incurrable when I was younger! I never knew they were a form of herpes until I tried to get rid of them completely a few years ago.
Maybe one day they’ll cure herpes which in turn should result in cold sores being cured too. We can all hope!
Take care,
Patty
